We traveled today from Flagstaff AZ to Richfield UT on US 89. We also lost an hour moving from Mountain Standard to Mountain Daylight time.
We did an unusual thing yesterday, ordering a room service dinner. After touring the area's National Monument offerings, we were pretty beat, and the effort it would have taken to go out and find a place to eat seemed daunting. Even going to the restaurant seemed a chore. So we ordered room service dinners. We split a mac and cheese and a turket cob salad. Worked out nicely.
This morning as we left, the tire warning light came on. Regrettably I have my portable tire inflator packed away in an inaccessible place in the car, so we went searching for a gas station with an air pump. We came upon a tire store, and we thought they might have a way to inflate a tire. Sure enough, around the back was a free air check. The employee came out, checked our tires, inflated them to proper pressure (the two rear ones were low), and we were off. No doubt with the extra weight and elevation changes the tires lost a bit of pressure from that.
The scenery on today's drive was simply outstanding. US 89 takes you through amazing canyon country, some desert, open grazing plains, and all manner of terrific scenery. Apparently it has earned the nickname the National Parks Highway, as you can access the Grand Canyon both South and North RIm, Glen Canyon Dam, Zion and Bryce National Parks, Capital Reef National Monument, and a few others. It was an incredible ride. If you've never driven the route, you should look it up on Google Maps with satellite view as well as its Wikipedia entry. It's a terrific road trip.
We split a chicken cordon bleu at a local restaurant whose prices were pretty sky-high. The food was good, and the portions (it came with soup) were enough for the two of us. Now we're chilling in the hotel room getting ready for the push to Pocatello ID tomorrow. Bedtime soon!
