Hey There! It's 9:14 AM MST, 45°F, sunny
Yesterday was a most miserable day. I think everything caught up with us all at once. Here's the scoop.
We got up in the morning, and DW was a burst of energy. She started rummaging around the apartment, putting things away and trying to bring a sense of order to the place. I had my morning coffee and a slice of the pumpkin bread our landlady left with us. I took a shower, but the water was lukewarm. After I got dressed I checked the setting on the water heater and bumped it up a notch. It's about the noisiest water heater I've ever heard when it heats water. Or maybe because I've always had a basement I've never heard the sound.
DW made a small shopping list for me to get some staples, and off I went to the store about noon. I stopped at Sonic to get a smashburger for lunch - first time. Not terrible. Then I hit the store.
I was maybe 2/3 of the way done when I saw a text from her - she had the chills and couldn't stop shivering. She had raised the heat and was under blankets and still was shivering when I checked out and got back home. So, given that she had been struggling with diverticulitis almost the whole trip, I figured enough was enough, and we went to the ER.
When we got there, the waiting room in the ER was filled. We came to find out by talking to the staff on a couple of occasions that for reasons unknown there was all of a sudden a major influx of patients, and we were one of them. If we had come at 10 in the morning the ER would have been practically empty. By the time we left, there was one patient left in the waiting room, an elder man who had been there before we arrived.
We spent probably about 5.5 hours all told in the ER. That doesn't sound like too much, but when you're not feeling well it's a long time. DW had blood work done, a CT scan done, and a urine sample taken. The only thing they discovered was an elevated white blood cell count, so they put her on a 10-day course of antibiotics. The CT scan showed no gut inflammation, and her urine was clear. Because the place was so full, she had to sit in a chair in the hall the entire time waiting for treatment. She had her fleece and a blanket wrapped around her and continued to complain about being cold.
She was released just before 6PM. We went to drop off her prescription and get a rotisserie chicken for dinner. She has not had a normal meal since I believe on Sunday afternoon, having subsisted most of the trip on a liquid diet of chicken broth, tea, and soft foods such as Jello and applesauce and bananas. She was hungry, but she didn't seem to have the energy to eat the chicken. She did eat some of it. But by the time she finished what she ate, she was no longer shivering, and by the time she went to lie down and watch some TV shows on her computer, she was much warmer. She did not sleep too well overnight, but is currently resting and trying to catch a nap.
So we're two old people struggling to stay above the curve at the moment. Both of us are pretty fried, frazzled, and low on energy. We need this weekend for some serious downtime. However, I still have projects to read and a podcast to produce by the 28th. I don't have too much time to just sit and chill. We'll watch football playoffs today, and I will try to get myself organized.
