A little late getting here today!
Yesterday DW and I had a nice time taking a drive around the region. We left about 11:30 AM after we both got dressed and had breakfast. Our first stop was at a well-preserved ghost town not far from here. We toured around the place and checked out the display in the schoolhouse. The mercantile and depot are in good shape considering, but you can't go in them at the moment for fear of more damage. I think they're working to restore it a bit more.
Our main destination was Wilcoxx to see if we could catch the sandhill cranes in the region. I wanted a bit of an off-road adventure, so I had mapped out a back road route. But as we approached one of the roads, a sign told us the road was in bad shape and went through private property. I wasn't sure this was true, but discretion being the better part of valor, we turned around. We had to drive one exit down I-10 to get to the next road.
We hit a dirt road that went along a railroad track for about 7 miles. We took it slow. DW doesn't like the feel of washboard on the suspension and is afraid the wheels will fall off. We got to a small unincorporated town with some paved roads, but I was looking for the next dirt road. It was there, but due to some construction right at the intersection it wasn't available. So I had to take the paved highway up to Willcox.
We stopped at a Circle K for a rest break, but the place had no public resto rooms. First time I ever experienced that. So after a little confusion, we finally found a Love's, and took a break there.
We tried to get to the Wilcoxx Playa, but as it turned out, Google Maps took us along the wrong side and tried to get us to get on the same dirt road at the construction site. By this time it was getting a little late, so we decided rather than try to get to the other side of the playa, we'd just head home. We headed south, took the Gleeson Rd. to Tombstone, and then back to SV. About 150 or so miles for the trip, the most gas weve used since arriving.
The evening was spent chilling. I am in the process of preparing to map our trip out to the Grand Canyon and then to WA, so I watched a lot of Sidetrack Adventure's video on US Rt. 395. It looks like a gret road trip, but I am concerned that the mountain passes from east to west across the Sierras might be either closed or require chains, so I am unsure if we can take this route. I do have a schedule I have to stick to, and any delay getting across the Sierras will not be good. I may be forced to take I-5 for that reason. Bedtime 11 PM.
