Well, yesterday ended up being so packed that I forgot to write. Can't be perfect.
I started the day out with a trip to the optometrist. My eyes are not the best, so while the trip isn't all that painful or anything, it's necessary to keep my eyes good. My vision didn't change much, and of course I have mild cataracts coming in. The hardest part of the progressive lenses is finding the sweet spot for the computer distance, which is a little different depending on whether or not I am writing from my desk or from my lap. My old optician was in for a little visit as well, which was fun.
From the optometrist, I headed home for a bit before going out to my senior tech student's home. We did not have a productive day, and it was frustrating. Her hearing aids were connected to her phone, and so I could not hear what she was hearing, and there seemed to be no way to disconnect them. I think the combination of her Parkinson's disease, her general inability to retain information from week to week, and her inexperience with the visual language of an iPad desktop makes working with her frustrating. I refused to let her pay me because we got nothing accomplished, but I am now thinking about how to advance her more to the use of her Alexa. I thought about an RSS newsreader for her, but she like content stuck behind the Substack paywall. I wish I could get her to understand the difference between her subscriptions themselves, and her subscription feed. Just learning how to choose and read her subscriptions would be a help. I think I am hitting a wall with her.
Then I had to hurry home for a Zoom conference with my financial advisor. Things are good there, and we took a nice chunk of gains out of stocks and into the money market fund. I don't mind the stock market much these days, and I stash all my cash in money markets myself. 4% is not terrible.
Within all that, three wild card games were played, and I was all in on all three of them. Great baseball was played. The Tigers-Guardians resulted in a heartbreaking loss for Cleveland, while the Cubs thrashed the arrogant Padres. The highlight of the evening was the Yankee rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler humiliating the Red Sox. What a performance he put on! I think I got so sucked in by his pitching and the game that that's the reason I forgot to write yesterday. An action-packed day!
Today has been a little bit harsher. DW had a good PT session yesterday, but I think overdid it, as she began to experience a lot of pain yesterday evening, to the point where she had to go upstairs to lie down. She did not get much sleep, and this morning I had to take her to her PT out in another town about 30 minutes away after playing a round of golf. Her hips were indeed out of alignment. She was prescribed some steroids but our pharmacy was out of stock, so not until Monday can we get them. Meantime she will be using tennis balls on her sore spot to relieve the pain a bit. Since she is on a blood thinner, she can only use Tylenol. Good thing she's not pregnant!! While I was chauffeuring her around I picked up a year's supply of maple syrup and some maple cream.
The weather has been unusually beautiful, with sun and clear skies. It looks like it will be that way over the weekend, and the leaves are looking spectacular. It's too bad DW has pain while riding in a car, but at least today we got out and saw many beautiful views along the drive. This time of year is so beautiful in the NE. We have to plan our apple-picking trip soon in the next 10 days or so. We're lucky to be retired and able to go out on weekdays for such trips - avoids the crowds. I need some apple cider donuts to be sure.
