Hey There! It's 7:33 AM EDT, 55°F, Wind 6 mph S, sunny
Yesterday was a very unusual day in that I had to force myself into things I'd rather not have to do. It leaves me cranky and a little depressed overall.
Yesterday was a zero day, so after I got cleaned up, the first thing I had to do was the "car dance." I have no garage, and at the moment I have 4 vehicles lined up in the driveway. Three of them are cars, the 4th is the RV. The car that needed to go to the shop was the furthest one in, so the other two had to come out. Then I had to take the last one out, leave it on the street, and bring the other two back in the driveway. Not a major deal; just a chore. Even if I had a garage it would still be a matter of which car is where in the lineup. In the early afternoon I took the car to the shop, and learned about an hour later it needs about $1400 worth of work. Not bad considering in close to two years this is the first time it's spent extensive time in the shop.
I tried to deal a bit more with the fly situation, but in the end DW and I decided to call the exterminator. We were due for a perimeter treatment anyway, so they are just adding the flies onto the treatment.
The worst part of the day came with posting the scooter onto Facebook and then having to deal with all the scammers and hassle of selling on that platform. I hate Facebook, so having to have anything to do with it just puts me in a foul mood. Dealing with FB scammers is the digital equivalent of having to deal with the flies in the porch.
In all the FB searching I've done, though, I may have found a bike for DIL's daughter. It has a paint job done on it, which technically is a nice job. I know the daughter likes it, and the price is good. So I am trying to get them to commit to having me buy it. I don't want to be that person who buys things without parental consent. Hopefully that will happen today. The person who owns the bike was actually pleasant to chat with and responded very, very quickly. I found that surprising and oddly refreshing.
Dinner was the highlight of the day - pork chops pan-fried with apples and charred pieces of fat, along with a fresh salad and sweet potato. DW cooked the pork chops to perfection.
It was a day off from baseball, so I decided to watch a play on Youtube I've been meaning to watch forever - The Gin Game with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. It was a recording of the original Broadway production. It was very good, but also very depressing. The subject matter was about two old people living in a run-down home for seniors. Cronyn's character convinces Tandy's character to join him playing gin, and the play revolved around the hands they play. Tandy wins every hand except one, which Cronyn accuses her of letting him win. The characters slowly reveal the small defeats in their lives that led them to living where they are, and they go from possibly being friends to mortal combatants over gin. As a play it's a little overwrought, but the work of these actors is impressive.
Once again, I went to bed with the themes running in my head. It brought to the forefront things I have to contend with on a daily basis. I know that I want to work towards reducing the amount of stuff I have, but the goal is really about dealing with and thinking about my ultimate future and where we will end up as we age. You always think that the downhill side of anything is easy and enjoyable, and you can coast without any effort. Only in life it this process reversed, where sliding downhill in life involves work you'd rather not do, and realities you'd rather not face if you had the choice. The Gin Game brought those issues home, and perhaps that's why I feel a little depressed today, since most of yesterday was spent with those tasks and themes.
Bedtime was 11:02 PM.
